The role of IT in energy systems: the digital revolution as part of the problem or part of the solution

Abstract: The architectural design of our energy systems dates back to a time without information technology (IT). Over time, IT was applied where it increased efficiency and safety. About 12 years ago, the Smart Grid era began. In the meantime, we talk about digitalization. Electrical energy systems require embedded systems, Internet of Things, computation clusters and data analytics. However, IT also has another role in the energy system, namely that of a substantial consumer. Crypto currencies and data centers are on… Show more

“…Developed countries have reliable electrical infrastructures and minimal growth rates that allow them to focus on grid standardization, smart meter implementation technology development, and the interoperability of grid-connected and distributed renewable energy generation [23] . The business model for Energy 4.0 offers various advantages, but there are also several challenges that must be addressed to enable a successful transition toward a more sustainable and human-centric Energy 5.0 business model.…”

“…Therefore, the use of technologies such as the Internet of Things, cloud computing and machine learning enables the implementation of advanced automation and process optimization scenarios [149]. Hence, as a consequence of digitalization, electrical energy systems require embedded systems, Internet of Things, computation clusters, and data analytics [151]. Secondly, and most importantly at present, IT solutions are one of the guarantors of energy security.…”

“…At the same time, it is worth paying attention to the strong interdependence of the energy and IT sectors. IT creates a context for the development of the energy sector, but it should also not be forgotten that IT is also a substantial consumer due to high energy consumption by crypto currencies and data centers, which are on the tremendous rise [151].…”

“…The demand for electricity production in the last few decades has increased progressively due to the rapid growth of the industries. There is also an increasing demand for better environmental practices in the industrial ecosystem based on IT technology [1][2][3] . It is, thus, necessary to review and develop materials for power plants that will operate in the increasingly harsh environments with higher temperatures and pressures.…”
