The Role of Inner Strength in Quality of Life and Self‐Management in Women Survivors of Cancer

Abstract: The role of inner strength in quality of life (QOL) and self-management, primary variables in the Theory of Inner Strength, were examined with demographic and clinical characteristics in 107 women with cancer. The strongest predictors of QOL were depressive symptoms, inner strength, and time since diagnosis, respectively, accounting for 82% of the variance in QOL. When depressive symptoms were excluded due to multicollinearity, 64% of variance in QOL was explained by inner strength, time since diagnosis, and c… Show more

“…The ISQ includes four dimensions and total score for the scale is 135 and the highest score on this scale means more inner strength. The Cronbach's alpha coefficients for the entire questionnaire were 0.80 and for dimensions of the ISQ vary from 0.85, 0.95, 0.85, 0.83 and 0.89 (4). In this study, Cronbach's alpha for the total Questionnaire was 0.87.…”

“…In this study, the Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the entire tool is 0.84. Inner Strength Questionnaire (ISQ) was introduced by Dingley and Roux (2014) to assess the concept Inner Strength (4). ISQ has 27 items and Likert 5 points for scoring in the range of strongly disagree (score 1) to strongly agree (score 5).…”

“…Brief, reliable tools that are applicable in quick-paced practice environments are needed that may tap into the individual or family aspects that impact self-management. The Inner Strength Questionnaire (Dingley & Roux, 2014; Lewis & Roux, 2011) is one example of a measure for resilience in women living with chronic conditions or experiencing adverse life events. The tool has a reliability of .91 and can be completed in practice in about ten minutes (Lewis & Roux, 2011).…”

“…10,11 As a result, many patients and families live with the ongoing challenges of managing cancer as a chronic illness. 11,12 Cancer experts have recommended using the Chronic Care Model 13 as a framework for care and suggest self-management in cancer requires partnership building between providers, patients, and families over the entire cancer-care continuum. 11 As described by the Institute of Medicine, 14 the cancer-care continuum extends across six major phases: prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and end of life.…”
