The role of inhibitory control in age-related operation span performance

Abstract: The present study was conducted to examine the inhibitory deficit theory on cognitive performance in old age. An experimental manipulation was applied to investigate if the efficiency of inhibitory control directly affects age-related working memory performance as measured by the operation span task. Forty-two older (M = 67 years, SD = 5.12) and 42 younger adults (M = 25 years, SD = 4.06) performed two versions of the operation span task that differed in the inhibitory demands placed on working memory. Age eff… Show more

“…Ini menunjukkan bahwa kedua komponen kognitif tersebut terpisah satu dengan lainnya seiring bertambahnya usia anak. Pada individu dewasa, dilaporkan bahwa kualitas kontrol inhibisi mencerminkan perfomansi working memory terkait bertambahnya usia (Zeinti & Kliegel, 2007). Valle et al (2019) menyatakan inhibitory control berperan menghambat ingatan tidak sadar (unconscious memory) terkait dengan tugas pemecahan masalah.…”

“…Agerelated deterioration in working memory performance has been suggested to be associated with poor inhibitory control over task-irrelevant information (Hasher and Zacks 1988). The defect of inhibiting irrelevant information may lead to information confusion in working memory and reduce the overall processing e ciency, which is considered as an important feature of cognitive aging (Zeintl and Kliegel 2007). There are several ways have been used to impacting the cognitive ability, including a healthy diet (Loughrey et al 2017), a good sleep quality (Ji et al 2023), movement training (Zhang et al 2023), and music training (Hays et al 2002).…”

“…In the cognitive exibility, shifting between sets requires inhibition of the current set of information, disengagement, to engage with the other set [9]. Similarly, working memory serves inhibition to exclude redundant and irrelevant information from it's limited capacity and to update the limited capacity with more relevant information [10][11][12]. Impaired inhibitory control has been found in ADHD [2,3], reading disability [13], arithmetic problem [14], and post traumatic stress disorder [15].…”
