The Role of Information Architecture in Designing a Third-Generation Library Web Site

Abstract: Library Web sites have evolved over the past decade, from simple pages with a few links to complex sites that provide direct access to hundreds of different resources. In many cases, this evolution occurs with little overall planning, often resulting in Web sites that are hard to manage and difficult for users to navigate. This article outlines the process of using Information Architecture (IA) to redesign a third-generation library Web site from the ground up. The result was a much more usable and cohesive li… Show more

“…Web statistics and analytics can also provide supplementary data to get a better picture of user behavior. It is also apparent that card sorting can help develop a site's information architecture (Faiks, 2000; Duncan and Holliday, 2008). These are but some of the variables that should be considered when creating a user‐centered library web site.…”

“…Dillion notes that information architecture is the “process of designing, implementing and evaluating information spaces that are humanly and socially acceptable to their intended stakeholders” (as cited by Duncan and Holliday, 2008). In the case of the City Tech library's web site, our shareholders consist of our community of students, faculty, and staff members.…”

“…For example, Rosenfeld and Morville (1998) see the dynamic due to furthered the information design to enrich the static data structure focusing on World Wide Web (Rosenfeld and Morville, 1998). With the increasing dynamic requirements, researchers begin to focus on IA framework to demands under di®erent situations (Campbell et al, 1994;Duncan and Holliday, 2008;Henderson et al, 2003;Riva and Rodriguez, 2002). From the time trend, it shows that increasing attention has been focused on dynamic aspects in terms of the changeable and situational environment, as for example the structure or design of the environment with the information collection, and information exchange (Campbell and Hummel, 1998;Evernden and Evernden, 2003;Linnell et al, 2005;Sowa and Zachman, 1992).…”

“…Researchers initially identify and employ the need for flexible IA in considering of the dynamic information environment.
