The Role of Industrial Parks in Mitigating Greenhouse Gas Emissions from China

Abstract: This study uncovered the direct and indirect energy-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of 213 Chinese national-level industrial parks, providing 11% of China's gross domestic product, from a life-cycle perspective. Direct emissions are sourced from fuel combustion, and indirect emissions are embodied in energy production. The results indicated that in 2015, the direct and indirect GHG emissions of the parks were 1042 and 181 million tonne CO equiv, respectively, totally accounting for 11% of national GHG e… Show more

“…The direct and indirect energy-related greenhouse gas emissions of 213 Chinese national-level industrial parks were 1042 and 181 million tonnes CO2 equivalent in 2015, respectively. These amounts account for 11% of the national greenhouse gas emissions for the year (Guo et al, 2018). Thus, industrial parks could be possible targets for the Chinese government to reduce its emissions and tackle climate change.…”

“…The total GDP of these 213 industrial parks reached 7.6 trillion yuan in 2015, accounting for 11% of the national GDP in the same year. The energy consumption of 213 national economic development parks in 2015 totaled 390 million tons of standard coal, accounting for 10% of the total national energy consumption in the same year [14]. Coal consumption accounted for 74% of total energy consumption, which clearly exceeded the share of coal consumption in China's industrial sector (56%) in the same year [14].…”

“…The data availability and reliability of these parks are also high. In the previous research [14], basic data of 213 national economic development parks were collected. The total GDP of these 213 industrial parks reached 7.6 trillion yuan in 2015, accounting for 11% of the national GDP in the same year.…”

“…The second aspect primarily centered on investigating GHGs transferring via trade and their influencing factors in a single region [ 24 , 33 , 38 , 58 , 59 , 60 , 61 , 62 ]. In general, given that China was the world’s biggest GHGs emitter, a mass of prior studies primarily studied the embodied GHGs in trade in China.…”
