The role of immaturity in human development.

Abstract: The possibility that infants' and young children's immature behaviors and cognitions are sometimes adaptive is explored and interpreted in terms of evolutionary theory. It is argued that developmental immaturity had an adaptive role in evolution and continues to have an adaptive role in human development. The role of developmental retardation in human evolution is discussed, followed by an examination of the relation between humans' extended childhood and brain plasticity. Behavioral neoteny, as exemplified by… Show more

“…Especially crucial in this regard is the variable "motivation." Although the definition of this concept is not unequivocal, recent research in evolutionary educational psychology seems to offer a good starting point (Bjorklund, 1997;Bjorklund & Pellegrini, 2002;Heckhausen, 2000), as it offers a way to predict student motivation (Ryan & Deci, 2000) or under what circumstances mechanisms such as specialization in a group allow room for feelings of competence, relatedness, and autonomy. These three factors are considered crucial for the development of intrinsic motivation, according to Ryan and Deci's influential Self Determination Theory (SDT).…”

“…We suggest these early limitations of the infant visual system might also enable the infant to better focus his or her attention to particularly important aspects of the visual environment, such as the face of a caregiver, and in this manner gradually acquire visual information in manageable amounts from what would otherwise be overwhelming amount of visual information. In a Bjorklund (1997) has suggested that an immature cognitive system, with a limited auditory memory span may function to reduce the amount and complexity of language that young children process and in this manner enhance comprehension as children acquire language. The TASC-based approach differs from evolutionary developmental psychology in a number of ways.…”

“…Assim, para todas as espécies que brincam, o brincar parece ser uma atividade provedora, entre outras coisas, de oportunidade para desenvolver habilidades motoras, prática do domínio de comportamentos sociais, e aprendizado através da experimentação em situações seguras com o mínimo de consequências (Bjorklund, 1997;Johnson, Christie & Yawkey, 1999). Porém, a causalidade e os fatores que influenciam as variações nas brincadeiras, em especial os contextos específicos, continuam intrigantes.…”
