The Role of Hyperthyroidism in Patients With Myocardial Infarction With Normal Coronary Arteries

Abstract: Agewall et al 1 compared the risk factors for myocardial infarction (MI) with normal coronary arteries (MINCA) versus that for MI with coronary artery stenosis. The authors do not report the thyroid function tests. The association between hyperthyroidism (overt or subclinical) and acute ischemic heart disease has been the subject of considerable debate. [2][3][4][5][6] The proposed mechanisms responsible for coronary events in hyperthyroidism include a hypercoagulable and hypofibrinolytic state as well as hyper… Show more

“…Hyperthyroidism is prone to acute ischemic heart disease ( 77 , 78 ). The proposed mechanisms responsible for coronary events in hyperthyroidism include a hypercoagulable and hypofibrinolytic state as well as hyperthyroidism-associated coronary vasospasm and increased myocardial oxygen demand ( 79 , 80 ).…”

“…Recently, in a pilot study, we 1 compared risk factors in patients with myocardial infarction (MI) with normal coronary arteries (MINCAs) with data from patients with MI with coronary artery stenosis. In a letter to the journal, Gunebakmaz and coworkers 2 comment on the role of hyperthyroidism in patients with MINCA.…”

“…Since there are a few case reports reporting MI in patients with subclinical hyperthyroidism with angiographically normal coronary arteries, 8–10 Gunebakmaz and coworkers 2 ask for data on thyroid status in our pilot study. 1 The problem is that the incidence of subclinical hyperthyroidism may be as low as approximately 1% in the general population.…”
