The role of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in inflammatory bowel disease

Abstract: Inflammatory bowel disease is a group of chronic recurrent diseases in the digestive tract, including ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Over the past few decades, the treatment of IBD has made great progress but there is still a lot of room for improvement. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) was defined as the therapeutic effect of inhaling 100% oxygen higher than one atmosphere and reported to be used in stroke, decompression sickness and wound healing. Since several authors reported the role of HBOT as a… Show more

“…Frankly, compared with cancer and other diseases, the exploration of mechanisms or therapies in ICH remains insufficient and needs more efforts ( Figure 5C ) ( Shi et al, 2023 ). Thus, it is reasonable to learn from the latest advances in other diseases particularly cancer ( Liang et al, 2020 ; Peng et al, 2022 ; Wang et al, 2022 ), hemorrhagic diseases ( Zhuang et al, 2018 ), ischemic diseases ( Chen et al, 2022 ; Zhang et al, 2022 ), and iron overloaded diseases ( Yang et al, 2020 ; Zhao et al, 2021 ; Lu et al, 2022 ), etc. Besides, further exploration of nanotechnology to design multifunctional nanomaterials holds promising prospects.…”

“…The subsequent development of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy, which delivers a high concentration of O to the body and tumor through pressurization, provides a solution to this problem [ 74 ]. Clinical results showed that despite the recurrence rate of more than 50%, tumors disappeared completely in 44% of the patients with malignant glioma treated with radiotherapy combined with HBO [ 75 ], indicating that the strategy of increasing the O content in tumor hypoxic areas is feasible. This situation has been further improved with the development of PDT.…”

“…Oxidative stress is a condition characterized by an imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and antioxidant defense systems ( You et al, 2023 ). During reperfusion following an ischemic stroke, the reintroduction of blood flow causes a paradoxical surge in ROS production, exacerbating the injury ( Wu et al, 2021 ; Hong et al, 2023 ). Oxidative stress damages the BBB by directly affecting the endothelial cells, pericytes, and basal lamina as well as activating MMPs, and inflammatory pathways indirectly ( Shaheryar et al, 2023 , 2023 ; Wang S. et al, 2023 ).…”
