The role of human papillomaviruses in cancer progression

Abstract: The importance of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and its role in the progress of cancer have been widely evaluated. The understanding of HPV association with certain cancers, such as cervical cancer, is very well established. A big step forward in the prevention of HPV associated cancers with the use of early detection by screening strategies has also been taken. In the last decade, development of HPV vaccination has reduced the number of cases in HPV infections and infection induced cancers. In this rep… Show more

“…The role of HPV in carcinogenesis process and progression has been already proven. 7,8 Molecular data suggest that E6 and E7, two transforming proteins encoded by HPV-HR, interfere of several biomarkers of cell proliferation and apoptosis including p53, p16 7,9 survivin and IGF-1R. 10,11 The expression profile of p16 and survivin markers and their prognostic value have been previously assessed on Tunisian patients with laryngeal cancer.…”

“…Global HPV infections are associated with an estimated 50% of cancers in women and 5% in men, with varying burden depending on anatomical site. Anogenital sites are more significantly affected with proportions of more than 99% of cervical, 97% of anal, 70% of vaginal, 47% of penile and 40% of vulval cancer cases, compared to 47% of oropharynx and 11% of oral cavity cancer cases [8]. HPV types 16 and 18 account for more than 70% of invasive cervical carcinoma (ICC), the most significant cancer caused by the HPV [9].…”

“…It is well reported the importance of HPV infection in different type of benign and malignant tumors. It is well established that there is association between HPVs with cervical cancer [29]. Moreover, environmental pollutions associated with conflicts may be another source for increase cancer related cases [5].…”
