The role of human epididymis secretory protein E4 in patients with endometrial cancer and premalignant endometrial lesions

Abstract: We evaluated the concentrations of human epididymis secretory protein E4 (HE4) and Ca-125 in relation to clinicopathologic features in patients with endometrial cancer and premalignant endometrial lesions. Women with abnormal uterine bleeding (n = 167) who underwent endometrial sampling were divided into four groups. Group 1: endometrial cancer (n = 68), group 2: atypical endometrial hyperplasia (n = 12), group 3: endometrial hyperplasia without atypia (n = 39) and group 4: controls (n = 48). Women with endome… Show more

“…These reports are in line with our results including the HE4 levels being higher in patients with the involvement of lymphatic and blood vessels and in patients with tumor metastases into the lymph nodes. Yilmaz et al and Kemik et al confirmed that in endometrial cancer patients, HE4 marker may be used for individual treatment planning 21,22…”

“…In the study by Yilmaz et al [ 15 ], a correlation was found between HE4 levels and disease severity. A link was found between HE4 levels and FIGO stage (RR = 0.482, p < 0.001), between endometrial thickness and HE4 levels, between lymph node invasion and HE4 levels (RR = 0.387; p < 0.001) and with tumor size (RR = 0.386, p < 0.001).…”

“…However, the HE4 marker can be increased in other benign situations such as age, smoking, renal failure, tubo-ovarian abscesses, or malignant in pancreatic adenocarcinoma, borderline ovarian tumors. We therefore try to take these confounding factors into account in order to better evaluate and interpret the variations of the HE4 marker [ 15 ].…”

“…Localized EC treatment consists of hysterectomy and double adnexectomy. Moreover, the identification of those patients that should undergo a pelvic and/or para-aortic lymphadenectomy depends on several parameters ( 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 ).…”
