Soil salinity is one of the biggest widespread abiotic stresses severely restricting crop production. Under stress, several extracts have been used as effective natural bio-stimulants. However, the combined influences of soil organic amendments and natural bio-stimulants on the production and defenses of plants grown under the dual stress of salinity and alkalinity are still only rudimentarily known. So, a field experiment was executed during the winter season of 2020/2021to assess the effectiveness of various organic amendments and the foliar application of various stimulants in reducing the detrimental effects of soil salinity on wheat plants grown under saline-alkali stress (electric conductivity = 13.2 dSm -1 and exchangeable sodium percentage = 15.1%).Twenty treatments were executed in a split plot design. The organic amendments[without soil addition (control), vermicompost, compost and chicken manure] were devoted in the main plots, while thebio-stimulants (without foliar application (control), moringa leave extract, licorice root extract, ginger extract, and humate potassium) were allocated in the sub plots. The findings illustrated that the highest plant's self-production of proline and enzymatic antioxidants i.e. catalase enzyme, peroxidase and superoxide dismutase were realized whenwheat plants were treated with vermicompost and sprayed with moringa extract, while the lowest values of proline and enzymatic antioxidants were recorded with untreated plants (without soil and foliar application). Regarding the yield and its components, the highest value of yield was realized with wheat plants treated with vermicompost and moringa extract simultaneously.

Humic Acids Enhance Potentially Toxic Elements (PTEs) Phytoextraction from a Contaminated Soil by Basil Plants

Elevated levels of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in soil possess a potential threat to human health. Probably, the use of hyper-accumulator plants can be an eco-friendly and cheap approach to attain more desirable levels of these contaminants in soil. The current study is a trial to increase the efficiency of basil (hyperaccumulator) plants to phytoextract some PTEs, namely Cd, Pb and Co froma clay soil artificially contaminated with these PTEsby the aid of elevated doses of humic acids (HAs 0-50mg kg -1 ) derived from a mature compost. A greenhouse experiment was conducted in 2021to attain this aim and lasted for 60 days, following a complete randomized design. During this investigation, soil moisture was kept gravimetrically ataround 70% of water holding capacityto avoid the leach out of soluble metal ions or organic complexes from the soil. By the end of this experiment, plants were harvested and the results indicated significant reductions in root and shoot dry weights and their lengths owing to the application of humic acids at a rate of 20mg kg -1 versus the control (0 mg HAs kg -1 ). Increasing the dose of HAs application (up to 50mg kg -1 ) led to concurrent significant increases in the abovementioned growth parameters; yet, their values were still below the control plants. Likewise, significant increases were noticeable for PTEs contents within roots and shoots of plants treated with 20mg HAs kg -1 while increasing the dose of HAs application resulted in significant reductions in their contents versus the lower application dose of HAs. Root-to-shoot translocation factor was >1 for each of Cd and Co, while the corresponding values for Pb were less than one. Unfortunately, all BAF values were below one and this result indicates that basil plants cannot be considered hyperaccumulators for Cd and Co but can be used for successful facilitated phytoextraction of these two contaminants from soil. In conclusion, humic acids although enhanced phytoextraction of the PTEs under study by basil plants,yet they cannot beconsidered the optimum chelating agent that could facilitate the phytoextraction of soil contaminants under conditions of the soil under study.

UE to the limited water supply and rising food demand, studying how applied irrigation rates affect crops at this critical time due to climate change is essential. Therefore, an experiment was carried out to examine the effect of different irrigation water rates, specifically 60, 80, 100, and 120 of the water requirements (WR), on the growth, bulb yield properties, and water status of garlic (Allium sativum L.) clone Sids-40. The data was recorded after 80 -140 days from planting, where polynomial regression analysis was estimated between the growth stages and growth parameters. Similarly, 100% of the WR considerably increases plant height, leaf number, leaf fresh weight, and growth attributes like absolute growth rate, specific leaf area, leaf area index, chlorophyll a, b, and total carotenoids contents. While the irrigation at a rate of 60% WR led to an intrinsic rise in leaf water saturation deficit, proline content, and ascorbic acid content. Bulb parameters such as weight, diameter, and number of cloves per bulb, besides yield quantity with bulb grade one G1 (above 5.5 cm), pyruvic acid as pungency, and dry matter contents were determined to be at their highest values with irrigation at 100% of the WR. A 60% of the WR water shortage represented the high yield reduction with grade 4 (less than 3.5 cm). Pearson's correlation revealed positive relationships between bulb yield, characteristics, and growth attributes. Hence, garlic plants respond to irrigation at 100% of the WR by improving their morpho-physiological, productivity and bulb quality.
