The Role of Food Packaging Design in Consumer Recycling Behavior—A Literature Review

Abstract: Household waste sorting at the source is an essential part of the waste management system in many countries. Correct sorting of this waste, including food packaging waste, is cost-effective, it facilitates the recycling process and enhances the quality of the recycled product. Although there is a growing body of research that studies the effect of different attributes of food packaging on household recycling behavior, the effect of these attributes on the sorting of the food packaging waste is not well known. … Show more

“…Many packaging studies have addressed the topic of milk packaging. Most of this research has focused on an investigation of either the packaging design [16] or its material [17]; to our knowledge, no study exists that has addressed the issue of consumer preference to pay a premium price for milk and juice in environmentally friendly packaging. The goal of this paper is to contribute to closing this gap by focusing on answering the following question:…”

“…These include (1) sociodemographic factors, such as age, gender and level of education, (2) internal factors, such as attitudes, beliefs, level of knowledge regarding which materials are recyclable, motivation and social norms, and (3) external factors, such as the distance between the living place and the recycling station, government intervention, collection services and costs [51][52][53]. A literature review by Nemat et al [54] revealed that within studies that focused on 'food packaging attribute' and 'recycling/sorting behavior', five of these factors were most often mentioned as being affected by food packaging attributes.…”
