“…The Scopus search (performed on 28 October 2020) for "Social innovation", "Women"/"Gender", and "Rural" resulted only in 15 items-out of which seven papers were on technical and medical analyses, therefore, of no relevance for the scope of our paper. “…The results of the analysis confirm that the relationship between STI cooperation and regional funding is positive (Piñeiro-Antelo and Lois-González, 2019), but regional DUI cooperation will have a greater impact than STI cooperation on a company’s ability to generate novel products. We can, therefore, say that public funding is successful at supporting cooperation between science and technology agents and firms but fails to promote the transfer of knowledge and subsequent development of novel products in companies in the region.…”

“…Overall, the acceptance of H1 (regional STI cooperation is more dependent than regional DUI cooperation on regional public funding) confirms that public funding policies at the regional level play a key role in encouraging additional private investment in R&D (Zahra et al , 2018), fostering collective efforts towards scientific cooperation (Astrom et al , 2008; Piñeiro-Antelo and Lois-González, 2019). This study contributes to current literature assessing that public funding emerges as a key enabler in supporting regional STI cooperation at the expense of regional DUI cooperation.…”
