The role of ecological niche evolution on diversification patterns of birds distinctly distributed between the Amazonia and Atlantic rainforests

Abstract: The Amazonian and Atlantic Forest share several organisms that are currently isolated but were continuously distributed during the Quaternary period. As both biomes are under different climatic regimes, paleoclimatic events may have modulated species' niches due to a lack of gene flow and imposing divergent selection pressure. Here, we assessed patterns of ecological niche overlap in 37 species of birds with disjunct ranges between the Amazonian and Brazilian Atlantic Forests. We performed niche overlap analys… Show more

“…This is due to the presence of riparian forests, which provide humid habitats for the species to occur. Previous SDM studies have highlighted the DD as a barrier for forest taxa with a disjunct distribution in the AM and AF (Batalha‐filho et al., 2013; da Silva et al., 2019, 2020; do Nascimento et al., 2021; Silva et al., 2023). However, when considering SDM projections for the past, it is noteworthy that the region has become more climatically favourable in some periods, particularly at the LGM.…”

“…SDMs play a crucial role in addressing the Wallacean shortfall by providing unbiased and easily interpretable estimates of species distribution information (Moonlight et al., 2020 ). They improve the accuracy and range of species distributions by incorporating ecological data such as climate and functional traits, along with fine‐scale aggregated data like specimen records, surveys, and experiments (López‐Aguilar et al., 2024 ; Silva et al., 2020 ). SDMs bridge the gap between fine‐scale precision and global representativeness, thus aiding in predicting and conserving biodiversity (Alvarez et al., 2021 ).…”
