The role of digital breast tomosynthesis in the breast assessment clinic: a review

Abstract: Mammography has long been considered as the primary technique in breast cancer detection and assessment. Despite low specificity, mammography has been preferred over other contemporary techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) and ultrasonography (US) due to superior sensitivity and significant health economic benefits. The development of a new technique, a limited angle cone beam pseudo‐three‐dimensional tomosynthesis, digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), has gained momentum… Show more

“…Architectural distortions are false negatives that typically accompany tissue overlap, so the level of contribution by 3DBT to diagnostic performance is high. [15] In the current study, 35 architectural distortions were detected by DBT, 30 lesions were evident in 2D mammography while the other five were hidden due to tissue overlap and were counted as false negatives for mammography. There was significant difference in BIRADS category of distortions between FFDM and DBT(P < 0.0001).…”

“…DBT technique shows the advantage that eliminates artifacts from normally dense glandular tissue and results in better detection of pathological masses, even masses with the size about 7-8 mm. In long-term trials, DBT technique shows superior value for size changes observation between following examination also [12].…”

“…To overcome the problem of digital mammography that sometimes gives superimposable tumor structures or may abstruse lesions in the breast with dense tissues during diagnosis, tomosynthesis has come as a useful advancement for breast cancer evaluation [25] with more sensitivity and specificity than conventional mammography technique. This term tomosynthesis was first termed by Grant et al [26].…”
