The Role of Cytotoxic Therapy with Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation in the Therapy of Myelodysplastic Syndromes: An Evidence-Based Review

Abstract: Clinical research examining the role of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (SCT) in the therapy of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) in adults is presented and critically evaluated in this systematic evidence-based review. Specific criteria were used for searching the published literature and for grading the quality and strength of the evidence and the strength of the treatment recommendations. Treatment recommendations based on the evidence are presented in Table 3, and were reached unanimously by a panel … Show more

“…In an attempt to improve chances for post-HCT success, patients with a high marrow myeloblast count, say more than 5 or 10%, typically will receive pre-HCT therapy with a hypomethylating agent or with more classical induction type chemotherapy (de Lima et al 2004b;Kindwall-Keller and Isola 2009;Maris et al 2004;Nakai et al 2005;Oliansky et al 2009;Scott et al 2005;Warlick et al 2009;Yakoub-Agha et al 2000). “…Several comprehensive evidence-based systematic reviews have addressed the role of hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) for patients with acute leukemia [1,2]. The treatment approaches and recommendations in these reviews were uniformly evaluated according to the grading of design and strength of evidence as well as for the strength of the treatment recommendation [3].…”
