The Role of Cytokines in Breast Cancer Development and Progression

Abstract: Cytokines are highly inducible, secretory proteins that mediate intercellular communication in the immune system. They are grouped into several protein families that are referred to as tumor necrosis factors, interleukins, interferons, and colony-stimulating factors. In recent years, it has become clear that some of these proteins as well as their receptors are produced in the organisms under physiological and pathological conditions. The exact initiation process of breast cancer is unknown, although several h… Show more

Bai et al showed that TNFα, iL1β and iL6 promoted metastasis after surgery for primary hepatocellular carcinoma (70).…”

“…The IL2 gene encodes for a signaling molecule involved in key functions of the immune system. Overexpression of IL2 has been observed in breast carcinoma biopsies, but not in normal breast tissues [57].…”

“…Cytokines and growth factors mediate not only intercellular communication in the immune system, but also influenced on the other cell types [32][33]. During carcinogenesis observed inflammation, which are important to tumor initiation, promotion, angiogenesis, and metastasis, cytokines are involved in all thesis events [32].…”

It is known that IL-1, IL-6, IL-11, TGF-b stimulate cancer cell proliferation and invasion [32]. Moreover, IL-6 and TNF-alpha can regulate estrogen synthesis in peripheral tissue, including normal and malignant tissues [34].…”
