The Role of Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound in Guiding Radiofrequency Ablation of Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Abstract: CEUS increases the conspicuity and provides better characterization of hypervascular HCC that are either not seen or poorly seen on B-mode US, and CEUS provides real-time guidance of RFA with good short-term treatment responses.

“…Venous ultrasound contrast agents are able to enter the microcirculation at the blood capillary level and show high sensitivity, specificity and spatial resolution of the perfusion level in target organs. 15 According to previous studies, CEUS allows immediate assessment of the result of ablation and achieves similar results to those achieved by enhanced CT and enhanced MRI. [15][16][17][18] In our study, RFA achieved a non-enhanced region of over 70% of the initial lesion size when assessed by CEUS.…”

“…Clinical application of a new perflubutane microbubble contrast agent (SonazoidÂŽ; Daiichi-Sankyo, Japan) has improved the utility of contrast-enhanced sonography-guided RFA as a treatment strategy for HCC [8,9,10,11]. …”

“…14 In particular, CEUS has more advantages in diagnosing lesions of HCC with diameter <1 cm and the diagnostic rate was increased from 53% to 94%. 15 The CEUS can clearly determine the number, nature, range, feeding vessel, size, infiltration range, and other information of the lesions of HCC and provide fairly detailed imaging basis for determination of treatment plan to precisely ensure if the lesions are removed thoroughly.…”
