Background/Aim: Pterygium is a relatively frequent ocular surface disease with an unexplained etiopathogenesis. Our study was carried out with the aim to identify the presence of inflammatory cells and mediators such as T-lymphocyte subgroups (CD4 and CD8), intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and human leukocyte antigen-DR (HLA-DR) in pterygium tissue. Methods: Pterygium tissue, obtained from 24 patients, and normal conjunctival tissue, from the nasal bulbar conjunctiva obtained from 14 patients operated for ocular perforations or vitrectomy, were separated into epithelial and stromal components under the microscope and suspended with phosphate-buffered saline solution to form a suspension. Cell suspensions were treated with specific antibodies for ICAM-1, VCAM-1, and HLA-DR and T-lymphocyte subgroups and evaluated with flow cytometry. The obtained data were compared statistically. Results: When compared to the control tissue samples, higher rates of ICAM-1-positive cells, VCAM-1-positive cells and HLA-DR-positive cells were recorded in pterygium tissue samples. CD4 and CD8 lymphocytes were also found to be at higher levels when compared to the control group. There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion: When compared with normal conjunctival tissue, pterygium tissue had increased levels of T-lymphocyte infiltration and inflammatory markers demonstrating the possible contribution of cellular immunity to the pathogenesis.

Background: Cystic fibrosis is one of the most common lethal genetic conditions. The defect is due to mutations in a gene on chromosome 7, named the cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator (CFTR), which functions as a chloride channel in epithelial membranes It is presumed that the disease affects all secretory epithelia including the eye. The objective of this study is to investigate the expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) by conjunctival epithelial cells of patients with cystic fibrosis and the correlation between of the expression of ICAM-1 and the grade of cystic fibrosis severity.Methods: Impression cytology specimens were collected in 24 patients with cystic fibrosis. Cells were processed for flow cytometry, by using monoclonal antibodies to ICAM-1.Results: A significant increase of ICAM-1 expression on epithelial cells was found in patients with cystic fibrosis when compared with normal eyes. A positive correlation between the ICAM-1 expression and severe clinical status of CF patients was also observed.Conclusions: Our findings suggest that the inflammation appears to have a role in the pathogenesis of the ocular surface changes in patients with cystic fibrosis. ICAM-1 expression on conjunctival epithelial cells may be a marker of the inflammatory status in cystic fibrosis patients. The method described here reveal good repeatability and reliability for the analysis of the inflammatory markers on conjunctival epithelial cells and can be a useful tool in evaluating of the ocular findings and treatment interventions in patients with cystic fibrosis. q 2007 Clinical Cytometry Society

Objective: The pathogenesis of vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is not fully understood and cannot be explained only with type I hypersensitivity reaction. The aim of this study was to determine the Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) levels in tear fluids of patients with VKC. Methods:Tear fluid samples were collected with microcapillary tubes for hematocrit at the lateral canthus of patients in the supine position without any anesthesia. Tear levels of MIF were measured by ELISA kit. Tear fluid samples were collected from 10 healthy subjects and 20 patients with VKC.Results: Tear levels of MIF in patients with VKC were significantly higher than those in controls (p<0,001). Conclusion:These results suggested that MIF may have significant effect on the pathogenetic process of VKC. J Clin Exp Invest 2013; 4 (2): 195-198
