The Role of Competition and Collaboration in Influencing the Level of Autonomy and Belonging in System of Systems

Abstract: Prior to this research, autonomy and belonging were perceived as two independent and distinguishing characteristics of system of systems. The objective of this paper is to explore the interdependency of autonomy and belonging, and the role of competition and collaboration among constituent elements to influence the level of autonomy and belonging. The definition of autonomy and belonging are restated using the multiattribute utility theory. Using this theory, competitions and collaborations are modeled as redi… Show more

“…As mentioned previously, the existing definition of SoS types is based on the degree of authority [10,11], and SoS development requires the guidance of SoS types [8]. SoS development prioritizes achieving SoS goals and then satisfies CS goals as much as possible [27]. Thus, we argue that the ultimate purpose of SoS authority is to achieve SoS goals, and there is a relationship between the degree of authority and both SoS goals and CS goals.…”

“…The emphasis of work in systems of systems engineering is how to overcome the interoperability challenges among technological systems that result from this independence. Examples would include Darabi and Mansouri [] who consider the balance between autonomy and belonging as well as Dickerson [] who applies a model‐driven framework to identify overlaps and inconsistencies among constituent systems.…”

“…A web‐based collaborative system is proposed in Huynh et al [2011] to facilitate collaboration among individual system programs in SoS acquisition. Competition and collaboration in SoS of swarm robots are modeled using multiattribute utility theory [Darabi and Mansouri, ] to study autonomy and belonging attributes of SoS. A mechanism design based on combinatorial auction problem is outlined in Davendralingam and Kenley [] to determine the optimal set of interaction rules between SoS and individual systems within a SoS acquisition context.…”
