In the dynamic interplay between people and their physical environments, the Global South stands as a mosaic undergoing a multitude of transformative influences in architecture and urbanism, within which examining social sustainability becomes imperative. While the prevailing attention remains on environmental and economic sustainability, this study addresses a persistent gap in the urban literature by focusing on the dynamic and manifold nature of social sustainability. Positioning itself within the context of sustainable development, the study links the pursuit of social aspects of sustainability with selected unique urban contexts from the Global South. Five cases, including Alexandria (Egypt), Tripoli (Libya), Basra (Iraq), Lilongwe (Malawi), and Accra (Ghana), are discussed through multi-layered investigations which involve attitude surveys, interviews, focus groups, participatory systematic observations, and behavioral mapping, engaging directly with inhabitants and stakeholders. Uncovering people–place narratives in the identified contexts, the cases are developed into five knowledge typologies that serve as practical tools for planning and design decision-making, policy formulation, and academic discourse. Discussions are conceived to demonstrate the transformative role people–place narratives play in fostering a more sustainable and equitable urban future. Conclusions are drawn to offer practical insights for stakeholders involved in various capacities in shaping the urban landscape of the Global South.

Achieving a sustainable supply of affordable housing is a strategic aim for the sustainable development of each country. This study highlights the relationship between local building regulations and the sustainable supply of affordable housing in Palestine. To do so, the paper assesses the building regulations in terms of achieving affordability in housing design. Thus, an assessment framework was developed based on learning from traditional design which proved to cover three values of affordability: collectivity, sharing, and diversity, as well as several factors of changes related to each of these values. The research data were collected through a survey of the opinion of 30 experts in the field of designing and building affordable housing in three main Palestinian cities: Nablus, Ramallah, and Jenin. The results showed that the need for values of affordability increases at the urban level compared to the single-building level. The paper's main finding is to establish an approach for a sustainable supply of affordable housing based on collectivity, sharing, and diversity. This approach can be a highpotential step for achieving sustainable development in Palestine. Therefore, several affordability-encouraging suggestions were made for improving the building regulations in Palestine based on the results of the paper.

The paper aims to measure the ability of housing design in Palestine to respond to any emerging functions and needs and the ability to adapt to new and possible sudden lifestyle changes. Four different interior house types were analyzed, two refer to the traditional approach of the closed plan, and another two types refer to the modern approaches of the open plan in terms of adaptation to new needs. These needs are adaptability to work from home, flexibility to change, separate or merge functions, and the adaptability to respond to health issues like quarantine. The study adopts the method of architectural analysis and questionnaire to measure people's opinions about all types in terms of sudden functions. The study takes the COVID-19 pandemic conditions as a case study. The main finding of the study is establishing a relationship between style of housing spatial design and the ability for adapting sudden changes in lifestyle. It shows that the traditional designs adapt to most changing lifestyles successfully, the independent guest room was converted into an office or guaranteed room. Moreover, the modern open plan house design with a T shape of the day wing is the best choice for adapting to the post-COVID-19.
