The Role of Cocaine- and Amphetamine-Regulated Transcript (CART) in Cancer: A Systematic Review

Maja Owe-Larsson,
Jan Pawłasek,
Tomasz Piecha
et al.

Abstract: The functions of cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) neuropeptide encoded by the CARTPT gene vary from modifying behavior and pain sensitivity to being an antioxidant. Putative CART peptide receptor GPR160 was implicated recently in the pathogenesis of cancer. However, the exact role of CART protein in the development of neoplasms remains unclear. This systematic review includes articles retrieved from the Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science and Medline Complete databases. Nineteen publications tha… Show more

“…ROS may damage proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids, affecting fertility mechanisms. Thus, CART's presence in mitochondria may have protective effects [29]. Consequently, a future proposal may be the study of oxidative stress mechanisms in women before and after bariatric surgery and their relation with the expression of the CART gene [29].…”

Little is known about the presence of single nucleotide polymorphisms in CART and leptin genes.…”

“…64 "CARTPT" has potential involvement in cancer development and is a potential biomarker in multiple cancer types. 65 "ENTPD7", found in cancer tissues, is associated with glioblastoma cell proliferation. 66 Similar studies finding relevance between radiomics features and gene expression can be helpful to enhance cancer diagnosis, treatment, and research.…”

“…CART signaling has been shown to activate ERK signaling in different studies. [46][47][48][49] To further validate the effectiveness of rhCART treatment on human aortic primary SMCs, we treated the cells with rhCART for 24 hours and performed Western blots. Immunoblots revealed a robust elevation in p-ERK levels following rhCART treatment (Figure 4D).…”
