The Role of Climate in the Collapse of the Maya Civilization: A Bibliometric Analysis of the Scientific Discourse

Abstract: This bibliometric analysis deals with research on the collapse of the Maya civilization-a research topic with a long-lasting history, which has been boosted significantly by recent paleoclimatic research. The study is based on a publication set of 433 papers published between 1923 and 2016. The publications covered by the Web of Science (WoS) show a significant increase since 1990, reaching about 30 papers per year at present. The results show that the current discourse on the collapse of the Maya civilization… Show more

“…It uses reference publication year spectroscopy (RPYS) and some other measures to identify historical roots (Kostoff & Shlesinger, 2005; Marx et al, 2014; de Solla Price, 1963). It has been widely used in different SRAs (Blažun Vošner, Kokol, Železnik, & Završnik, 2019; Comins & Leydesdorff, 2017; Marx, Haunschild, & Bornmann, 2017b, 2017a; Rhaiem & Bornmann, 2018). CRE analyses references publication years and aggregate them over time.…”

“…The present study provides a bibliometric analysis of QT 2.0, methodologically following previous studies dealing with research fields such as climate change [6], specific aspects thereof [7][8][9], and density functional theory (DFT) [10]. The dataset used in this study has been analyzed in the white paper by Bornmann et al [11], but only for the time period 2000-2016 and with a focus on Germany.…”

“…The green cluster is focused on Q COMM. The most frequent keywords quantum cryptography, (quantum) communication, quantum entanglement, quantum teleportation, and bell theorem point to pioneering experiments [8,20] as well as the proposal and realization of quantum communication protocols and quantum teleportation in the 1980s and 1990s [33,38,40]. The brown cluster belongs to Q COMP.…”

“…In that manner, it can be used to identify historical root papers, which can describe the knowledge development of the scientific area being analysed. RPYS has been used in identifying historical roots or research milestones, for example, in academic efficacy studies (Rhaiem & Bornmann, 2018), commercialization of knowledge (Biranvand, Shabani, Asemi, & Cheshmeh Sohrabi, 2017), biomedical innovations (Comins & Leydesdorff, 2017), citation analysis (Hou, 2017), global warming and tea production (Marx, Haunschild, & Bornmann, 2017a), the role of climate in the collapse of the Mayan civilization (Marx, Haunschild, & Bornmann, 2017b), tribology (Elango, Bornmann, & Kannan, 2016), knowledge management (Khasseh & Mokhtarpour, 2016), global positioning systems (Comins & Hussey, 2015), and Higgs boson (Barth, Marx, Bornmann, & Mutz, 2014).…”
