The Role of Circadian Rhythms Among Medical Students in Time Management Organization and Academic Achievement

Abstract: Time management is one of the biggest problems of medical students. In this study, we examined the circadian rhythms of medical students and factors which may affect academic performance: perceived stress, sleep quality, time management. Students answered a Morningness-Eveningness questionnaire, the Time Management Personal Assessment questionnaire, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the Perceived Stress Scale questionnaire. The correlation (R=0.87) between chronotype and GPA (P<0.001) showed a hig… Show more

“…All these factors created a high level of burnout and tremendously affected the quality of students' life and their well-being. As a medical education is accompanied by a high academic workload, students are required to develop a self-discipline (time management, study plan, sleep schedule), self-regulation skills, and strong resilience (Modna & Scott, 2017;Modna et al, 2019). Academic stress can be minimized by introduction of spaced or deaccelerated learning program, which will reduce a workload and, possibly, prevent burnout.…”

“…14,[19][20] Researches indicate that allowing individuals to plan, sequence, and monitor their learning in a way directly improves performance. [21][22][23][24][25] As regulatory skill of the students has been found to improve with personal experience in previous study, we hope to find higher score on this scale of metacognition as these student progresses to advanced semester. 14 There is a room for improvement in both components, knowledge of cognition and regulation of cognition, to enhance metacognitive awareness level among our students.…”
