The role of charged particles in the positive corona-generated photon count in a rod to plane air gap

Abstract: The relationship between the calculated charged-particle densities in positive corona, the rate of streamer production, and the photon count from the corona were investigated and found to be closely related. Both the densities of electrons and positive ions peaked at 11.8 kV, near the corona inception voltage; they then fell rapidly before slowly rising again. This behavior was exactly matched by the measured photon count. The calculation of the charged-particle density in a positive corona was achieved by mea… Show more

“…19 In experiment, semi-quantitative method was employed to study the numerical calculation of photon quantity. [20][21][22] A phenomenon was confirmed that the number of UV photons varies with the applied voltage by experiments. Furthermore, the experimental results about the absorption curve of the photoionization radiation and the characteristic of photoelectron energy distribution were presented from the corona discharge.…”

“…The 'photon count' could well represent the intension of the corona discharge (as in Figure 7b). The upper limit of the UV imager was not experienced as the peak photon count number exceeded 10 times the highest number inspected [2,31]. Many elements, such as air pressure, temperature, humidity, test distance and the gain will have significant effects on the photon counting rate.…”

“…Corona discharge and its associated electric field, audible noise, electromagnetic interference may bring about severe electromagnetic problems near high voltage power transmission lines and substations. Therefore it has been a continuing and essential subject of research work by both electrical engineers and physicists [1][2][3][4][5][6].…”

“…Then, electrons at the front of the avalanche will move to the conductor driven by the applied electric field. As electrons are absorbed by the conductor, a large amount of positive ions and a few negative ions are accumulated in the gap and reduce the electric field in the ionization ozone [28][29][30] which results in the suppression of the corona discharge (as shown in Figure 12). Subsequently the corona discharge is suppressed until positive ions are removed to restore the necessary condition for another discharge.…”
