The Role of CEUS in the Evaluation of Thyroid Cancer: From Diagnosis to Local Staging

Abstract: Ultrasound often represents the first diagnostic step for thyroid nodule evaluation in clinical practice, but baseline US alone is not always effective enough to achieve thyroid nodule characterization. In the last decades new ultrasound techniques, such as CEUS, have been introduced to evaluate thyroid parenchyma as recommended by EFSUMB guidelines, for use in clinical research field, although its role is not yet clear. Several papers show the potential utility of CEUS in the differential diagnosis of benign … Show more

“…High-resolution US is a strongly recommended tool for the preoperative diagnosis of PTC and the evaluation of cervical LNs according to ATA guidelines. Some studies have reported that the CEUS features of PTCs could preoperatively predict the cervical LNs metastasis (14). Zhan et al found that iso-or hyperenhancement at peak time could predict cervical LNs metastasis in PTC patients (15).…”

“…We hypothesize the high cytological adequacy of CEUS-FNA relates to the viable tissue targeted puncture. For one hand, CEUS accurately distinguishes viable tissues from inactive, and locates the viable tissues within nodules [ 21 , 22 ]. Viable tissues, including follicular tissue, granulation tissue, and tumor tissue are shown certain degrees of contrast enhancements under CEUS.…”

“…There are two significant functions of ultrasound which are for diagnostic of internal body and pregnancy. The frequency range commonly employed in medical ultrasound is 2 to 18 megahertz, hundreds of times above the human hearing range [34][35][36]. A transducer is a device that rubs the patient's skin across the area being investigated during an ultrasound.…”
