The role of cellulose nanofibrillated fibers produced with combined supercritical carbon dioxide and high‐pressure homogenization process as reinforcement material in biodegradable polymer

Abstract: The production of kenaf bast cellulose nanofibrillated fiber (CNF) using a combined method of supercritical carbon dioxide (SC CO2) and high-pressure homogenization as the reinforcement with biopolymer were studied. The obtained CNF was used as reinforcement in polylactic acid using the solvent casting method. The obtained CNF were verified using TEM and FTIR analysis to approve the effectiveness of the technique. The dispersion of kenaf bast cellulose nanofibrillated fiber in modified PLA was studied with sca… Show more

“…The DTA curve of unbleached native pulp exhibits two steps of degradation, which was assigned to the hemicellulose and lignin present in the unbleached pulp. The peak temperature of the DTA curve shifted to higher temperatures, thus indicating higher thermal stability (Rizal et al, 2021).…”

“…The absorption band of 2850–3000 cm −1 was attributable to the asymmetric CH vibration sketch in the methylene (CH 2 ) and methyl (CH 3 ) groups, while the CO (carbonyl) groups appeared at the peaks of 1575–1650 cm −1 in conjugated and unconjugated ketones region 38 . The appearance of carboxyl (CC) groups stretching vibration in lactone and aldehyde was indicated by the presence of a signal area band of 1500–1550 cm −1 39,40 .…”

“…In general, in polymer blends, when the continuous film matrix effectively transfers mechanical stress to the dispersed phase, reducing its own load, the resulting film exhibits improved mechanical properties. 6,7,9,42,59 In short, incorporating oil into films typically softens them, evidenced by decreased TS and increased EAB, characteristic of plasticizers. However, peppermint oil uniquely decreases TS without a proportional increase in EAB.…”
