The Role of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging in the Evaluation of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

Abstract: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common inherited cardiac disorder, affecting 1 out of 500 adults globally. It is a widely heterogeneous disorder characterized by a range of phenotypic expressions, and is most often identified by non-invasive imaging that includes echocardiography and cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMR). Within the last two decades, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has emerged as the defining tool for the characterization and prognostication of cardiomyopathies… Show more

“…In fact, many modalities are used to acquire images of the human heart. One of the least non-invasive modalities is magnetic resonance imaging MRI, a technique that allows the acquisition of functional (which enables locating the areas involved) and anatomical (which provides a realignment to correct a subject motion) images [4]. Cardiac MRI is used as a reference method that enables the detection of cardiac pathologies.…”

“…Although echocardiography is widely used to assess cardiac structure and function, cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) has been recommended as the gold standard in the assessment of HCM due to its high spatial resolution, good image quality, and ability to identify the morphological variants of HCM (12). CMR is also a reference technique for measuring LV volume, EF, and LV mass (13).…”

“…Although echocardiography is usually used to assess HOCM, it may miss some hypertrophic segments and underestimate the extent of hypertrophy in the basal anterolateral wall due to limited echocardiographic windows [ 3 ]. Owning to its high resolution delineation of hypertrophy, cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI) has been shown to provide precise and reproducible assessment of the LV mass (LVM) and volumes [ 4 ].…”
