The Role of Carbon Nanotube Pretreatments in the Adsorption of Benzoic Acid

Abstract: Four different types of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were used and compared for the treatment of benzoic acid contaminated water. The types of nanotubes used were: (1) non-purified (CNTsUP), as made; (2) purified (CNTsP), not containing the catalyst; (3) oxidized (CNTsOX), characterized by the presence of groups such as, –COOH; (4) calcined (CNTs900), with elimination of interactions between nanotubes. In addition, activated carbon was also used to allow for later comparison. The adsorption tests wer… Show more

“…These materials have distinctive structural and electronic characteristics. As a result, they are a fascinating class of materials that have piqued the interest of scientists for fundamental research and a variety of applications, including sorption processes [178]. They are highly effective for the treatment of water and wastewater due to their high capacity for adsorbing a wide range of contaminants, fast kinetics, large specific surfaces, and selectivity towards aromatics.…”

“…The method is based on two processes, initial ultrafiltration (UF) followed by a nanofiltration (NF) treatment [59]. In this case, the future use of innovative nano materials such as carbon nanotubes which have shown great adsorbing and purifying capacity in many other sectors is particularly interesting [60][61][62][63][64][65][66][67]. Incineration represents a theoretically decisive method for solving the problem of OVWs.…”

“…The use of carbon materials, such as graphene and nanotubes, can facilitate the extraction of metabolites from complex matrices [59][60][61][62], allowing the selective recovery of whole classes of organic compounds based on the electronic interactions between the carbon structure of the extractive solid medium and the molecular structures of metabolites. Extractions with these carbon materials could better work by simply choosing the ideal organic solvent systems [63,64]. In this context, multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have successfully been proposed [65].…”
