The role of bovine collagen in the treatment of acne scars

Abstract: Eighteen patients with a variety of depressed scars, predominantly as a result of acne, were treated with a purified bovine dermal collagen prepared as an injection (Zyderm I) for direct implantation into the scars. Both subjective and objective assessment showed encouraging results in those with soft and distensible scars. This method is, however, largely unsuitable for rigid, fibrotic or ice-pick scarring. Any improvement was usually apparent by the third treatment session. This is a safe, virtually painless… Show more

“…The role of androgens in the pathogenesis of acne is well established, and increased androgen levels in acne patients have been repeatedly demonstrated in many studies 23–25 . Androgens play an essential role in increasing the size of sebaceous glands and stimulating sebum production, 26 as well as in stimulating keratinocyte proliferation in the ductus seboglandularis and the acroinfundibulum 27,28 . Conversely, anti‐androgens reduce the synthesis of sebaceous lipids and improve acne 29…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5][6] Factors limiting the aforementioned techniques include incomplete scar removal, poor intraoperative visualization, transmission of infectious debris, scar worsening, tissue fibrosis, and permanent pigmentary alteration. Many different treatment modalities, including chemical peels, surgical excision, punch grafting, dermabrasion, and tissue augmentation with a variety of filler substances have been used to ameliorate atrophic scars with varying degrees of success.…”

“…The advent of dermal fillers began with bovine collagen usage in the 1980s. In a small series, bovine collagen was shown to have efficacy in the treatment of acne scarring . Several studies have characterized the effectiveness and longevity of different types of permanent and semipermanent dermal fillers in the treatment of acne scarring .…”
