The Role of Bioactive Compounds of Nigella sativa in Rheumatoid Arthritis Therapy—Current Reports

Abstract: Black cumin (Nigella sativa, NS) is included in the Ranunculaceae family and is classified as a medicinal plant due to very high levels of various bioactive compounds. They determine its therapeutic effects, including anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, anti-cancer, hypoglycemic, antioxidant, hypotensive, hypolipidemic, and immunomodulating properties. The results of scientific studies indicate a supporting role of black cumin in the treatment of autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, due to the he… Show more

“…Concomitant NS treatment with AA significantly decreased liver IL-1β levels, while this decrease in TNF-α level, although not significant, tended to decrease (Figure 2). The reason for this is thought to suppress the inflammatory process by neutralizing the oxidative stress that causes liver damage, thanks to the antioxidative and antiinflammatory effects of NS (48). Our findings are also consistent with another study stating that thymiconicone, the main component of NS, decreased the activities of inflammatory markers such as TNF-α and IL-1β in rats exposed to experimental AA toxicity (1).…”

“…NS, generally known as black seed or black cumin, has traditionally been used as a food preservative, additive, or applied as spice (6). According to the findings obtained from the studies carried out NS has antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, anticonvulsant, immunomodulator, antinociceptive, antiallergic, antibacterial, antiviral, antidiabetic, antitumor, anti-hepato-nephrotoxic and neuroprotective effects (7,43,48).…”

“…The research of Bordoni et al [5] showed anti-Inflammatory properties of Nigella sativa oil related to the thymoquinone content, but also on other antioxidant components of the oil. As related by Zieli ńska et al [6], black cumin plays a supporting role in the treatment of autoimmune diseases, including Molecules 2022, 27, 652 2 of 16 rheumatoid arthritis. The food industry is also paying attention to the use of the Salvia hispanica seeds, which are a natural source of omega-3 and omega-6, fiber, proteins, and natural antioxidants such as polyphenols [8].…”
