The role of bed morphology and channel curvature in the redistribution of momentum in a series of meander bends, Pearl River, USA

Abstract: <p>The process of meandering in alluvial rivers is the result of spatial variability in erosion and deposition that systematically alternates from one side of the channel to the next along sequential meander bends. The localized erosion of outer banks, typically downstream of the bend apex, occurs due to an outward advection of high-momentum fluid leading to an asymmetric lateral distribution of streamwise velocity. Two primary mechanisms are responsible for the lateral flux of streamwise momentu… Show more

“…Parameters were initiated in the RiverSurveyor Live software, and navigation commenced with the ADCP, and the monohull boat maintained a constant speed to measure the three-dimensional flow velocities and water depths. To mitigate the impact of random errors and poor data quality, two round trips were performed for each measurement section because of the substantial width of the rivers in the study area 35,36 . Underwater topography was derived from data collected by the ADCP and RTK surveys, whereas RTK measurements were applied to obtain elevations on the beach.…”
