The Role of B and T Lymphocyte Attenuator in Respiratory System Diseases

Abstract: B and T lymphocyte attenuator (BTLA), an immunomodulatory molecule widely expressed on the surface of immune cells, can influence various signaling pathways and negatively regulate the activation and proliferation of immune cells by binding to its ligand herpes virus entry mediator (HVEM). BTLA plays an important role in immunoregulation and is involved in the pathogenesis of various respiratory diseases, including airway inflammation, asthma, infection, pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome and lung … Show more

“…Lymphocytes have an important role in immune regulation and can be involved in the pathogenesis of respiratory diseases such as pneumonia, infections, asthma, and acute respiratory distress syndrome ( 62 ). The lower lymphocyte count in female mECT patients suggests that immunity may be reduced, potentially increasing the incidence of HAP.…”

“…HVEM, which belongs to the tumor necrosis factor receptor (TNFR) superfamily, has been recognized as a novel immune checkpoint in recent years ( 33 ). HVEM is expressed primarily on immune cells and functions as a ligand to activate the B- and T-lymphocyte attenuator (BTLA) on other immune cells ( 34 ). Two categories of BTLA are CTLA-4/CD28/CD80/CD86 (function at the early phase of T-cell activation) and PD-1/PD-L1/PD-L2 (control the effector phase of the immune response in peripheral tissues) ( 35 ).…”

“…Herpesvirus entry mediator (HVEM) belongs to the tumor necrosis factor receptor (TNFR) superfamily and has been identified as the only BTLA ligand. BTLA and HVEM binding can help T cells maintain a naive state, thus inhibiting T-cell differentiation and proliferation and maintaining immune homeostasis (Deng et al, 2021;Flynn et al, 2013;Miller et al, 2009). Many studies on BTLA have produced similar conclusions.…”
