The role of auxin and gibberellin in tomato fruit set

Abstract: The initiation of tomato fruit growth, fruit set, is very sensitive to environmental conditions. Therefore, an understanding of the mechanisms that regulate this process can facilitate the production of this agriculturally valuable fruit crop. Over the years, it has been well established that tomato fruit set depends on successful pollination and fertilization, which trigger the fruit developmental programme through the activation of the auxin and gibberellin signalling pathways. However, the exact role of eac… Show more

“…Specific distribution of auxin in fruit tissues by the function of auxin transporters has been shown to regulate fruit development and ripening [34]- [39]. However, crosstalk among hormones rather than individual action is most likely to be the common theme regulating most biological processes including fruit ripening [31] [32] [40]- [42]. In particular, auxin-ethylene interaction in plants has been well-documented [43]- [45], though very little is known in maturing apple fruit.…”

“…However, with the exception of ethylene, which has been shown to control many ripening-associated metabolic pathways such as those leading to pigment and aroma volatile production, the impact of other hormones on fruit quality traits remains poorly known (Pech et al, 2012). Auxin is, however, an important phytohormone for initiation of fleshy fruit development, since it was shown to play a key role in triggering fruit set upon flower fertilization (Pandolfini et al, 2002;Wang et al, 2005;de Jong et al, 2009ade Jong et al, , 2009b. Auxin is also essential in determining final fruit size through the control of cell division and cell expansion (Devoghalaere et al, 2012).…”

“…GA 3 telah diketahui mampu meningkatkan fruit set dan hasil buah tomat pada konsentrasi yang rendah (Sasaki et al, 2005;Khan et al, 2006). Namun, buah tomat hasil induksi giberelin memiliki ukuran lebih kecil dari pada buah berbiji yang menunjukkan bahwa adanya peranan hormone lain terhadap pertumbuhan dan perkembangan buah tomat (de Jong et al, 2009). Selain perubahan ukuran buah, giberelin juga mempengaruhi pembentukan jumlah lokul atau rongga buah (Sawhney and Dabbs, 1978;Sawhney, 1984;Wien and Zhang, 1991;Liu and Li, 2012).…”
