The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Echocardiography

Abstract: Echocardiography is an integral part of the diagnosis and management of cardiovascular disease. The use and application of artificial intelligence (AI) is a rapidly expanding field in medicine to improve consistency and reduce interobserver variability. AI can be successfully applied to echocardiography in addressing variance during image acquisition and interpretation. Furthermore, AI and machine learning can aid in the diagnosis and management of cardiovascular disease. In the realm of echocardiography, accu… Show more

“…Several studies have shown how the use of AI Echo can minimize the known limitations of these approaches. [40][41][42]44,47,50,51 An encoder-decoder-based convoluted neural network DL software was used by Leclerc et al 40 to analyze 500 echocardiogram images to measure LVEF using apical 4-and 2-chamber views. The software outperformed non-DL methods and was more consistent than the observed interobserver variability.…”

“…In the field of imaging, the progress of AI has been enormous in the last years, affecting all the phases of the diagnostic process. The advances have been bigger in the field of computed tomography imaging or magnetic resonance imaging[ 11 ], but the next step is echocardiography to generalize the value of AI in imaging[ 12 ], as shown in the review of Barry et al [ 11 ].…”
