The Role of Arabinogalactan Type II Degradation in Plant-Microbe Interactions

Abstract: Arabinogalactans (AGs) are structural polysaccharides of the plant cell wall. A small proportion of the AGs are associated with hemicellulose and pectin. Furthermore, AGs are associated with proteins forming the so-called arabinogalactan proteins (AGPs), which can be found in the plant cell wall or attached through a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor to the plasma membrane. AGPs are a family of highly glycosylated proteins grouped with cell wall proteins rich in hydroxyproline. These glycoproteins have… Show more

“…It has been proposed that Arbinogalactans (AGs) are structural components of the plant cell wall and they are associated with proteins forming AGPs. Degradation products of AGPs generated by hydrolytic enzymes of pathogens could function as damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) eliciting the plant defense response [ 48 ]. Therefore we speculate that product of FOIG_15013 may secrete out and act as an avirulence effector, and likely activates the host defense responses during the infection of Foc .…”

“…Ulvan and AGP-like enriched fraction used for biological tests on plants were characterized mainly in terms of their glycosylation, which is assumed to be responsible for the AGPs functionality in plant development and defense responses ( Lopez-Hernandez et al, 2020 ; Villa-Rivera et al, 2021 ).…”

“…Since the cell membrane and its wall in plants are considered to be the unique physical barriers in plant-fungal pathogen interactions, the integrity of the cell membrane and its wall structure is vitally important for conferring host resistance in horticultural crops against fungal infection ( Segal and Wilson, 2018 ; Villa-Rivera et al, 2021 ). Therefore, the imbalance of cell integrity may rapidly aggravate the development of disease decay in fungal-infected fruits.…”
