The role of apoptosis in cisplatin-induced ototoxicity in rats

Abstract: Ci splatin is a chemotherapy agent frequently used to treat different types of neoplasia. Ototoxicity is one of the side-effects which cause significant morbidity and limits its use. This study aimed at assessing the role of apoptosis in cisplatin-induced ototoxicity. Design: experimental study. Materials and Methods: male Wistar rats were treated with intraperitoneal cisplatin, in the doses of 24 and 16 mg/kg. The animals were assessed by means of distortion product evoked otoacoustic emissions (DPEOAE) or br… Show more

“…A similar result was observed by Rebert et al 28 , as well as by Freitas 23 . However, in hamsters, Church et al 29 reported prolongation of the I-IV interval with the 15 mg/kg dose of CDDP, suggesting retrocochlear damage by this drug.…”

“…Tanaka et al 22 found a similar result as described with a 23% weight loss in animals treated with a dose of 13 mg/ kg. However, other authors such as Freitas et al 23 found a mean weight loss, after 3 days of evaluation, of 14% for the dose of 16 mg/kg of CDDP. In group C, there was an increase in the weight of the animals of approximately 6%, and although the animals were also submitted to the stress of intraperitoneal injection, they did not present diarrhea or reduced appetite like the animals exposed to CDDP.…”

“…the control group) through intraperitoneal route as indicated in the literature. [14,21] At the same day each treatment group received curcumin, vitamin E, and their combinations in that order. Curcumin was administered through intraperitoneal route at a dose of 200 mg/kg for 5 days at the same time of the day.…”

“…This argument was found to be compliant with the results of the study. In connection with this assumption, Freitas et al [21] detected that application of cis- Gevrek and Erdemir. Investigation of the effects of curcumin, vitamin E and their combination in cisplatin-induced testicular apoptosis using immunohistochemical technique platin at a dose of 16 mg/kg induced apoptosis three days later, as was revealed in our study.…”
