The Role of Angiopoietine-2 in the Diagnosis and Prognosis of Sepsis

Abstract: ANG-2 serum levels were elevated in sepsis, being well correlated with PCT values and prognostic scores. ANG-2 should be considered as a useful biomarker for the diagnosis and the prognosis of this pathology.

“…The renal endothelium is identified as a rich source of Ang-2. Its release from the kidneys may increase due to kidney injury, for example, in the course of AP [ 2 , 14 , 22 , 23 ]. The correlations between Ang-2 and urea, creatinine, uNGAL, and albuminuria support the association of Ang-2 with kidney injury.…”

“…Endothelial cell dysfunction constitutes the principal mechanism of the related processes which occur in sepsis (21). Ang-2 is a biomarker which is increased in septic patients and can be used for stratifying the severity of this condition (22). Literature describes associations between Ang-2/Tie-2 ratio in septic patients, with no certain diagnostic value in septic patients as well as other biomarkers with potential prognostic value, such as soluble urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (SuPAR) (23,16).…”

“…Increased plasma Ang-2 levels are reported in critically ill patients with sepsis and are associated with increased hospital mortality [17,18,19,20,21], as well as being correlated with the severity of illness [16,22].…”

“…Currently available evidence suggests that the Ang-2/Tie-2 ratio is changed in patients with sepsis [17], though more associated data on Ang-2/Tie-2 responses are required [16].…”
