The Role of Affect Spin in the Relationships between Proactive Personality, Career Indecision, and Career Maturity

Abstract: This study attempted to investigate the influence of proactive personality on career indecision and career maturity, and to examine the moderating effects of affect spin. The author administered proactive personality, career indecision, and career maturity scales to 70 college students. Affect spin was calculated using the day reconstruction method, wherein participants evaluated their affective experiences by using 20 affective terms at the same time each day for 21 consecutive days. Hierarchical regression a… Show more

“…However, while relationships with the Big Five and affect spin and pulse have been established, there is a lack of research examining the differential relationships that spin and pulse have with outcome variables in comparison to those of the Big Five. Given that the burgeoning empirical literature on affect variability has focused almost exclusively on spin without much attention to pulse (e.g., Beal et al, 2013;Park, 2015;Clark et al, 2016), an important contribution of the present study is that we comparatively examined the unique relationships of both spin and pulse with task-focused effort and performance.…”

“…Even in cases when individuals try to persist in meeting task demands, the unpredictability associated with high affect variability can lead to a reduction in task-focused effort as individuals re-direct cognitive resources to regulating their emotional swings (Beal and Ghandour, 2011;Park, 2015). Prior research has linked emotion control to successful acquisition and adaptive performance (Bell and Kozlowski, 2008;cf.…”

“…Positive affect was evaluated in terms of how “happy,” “alert,” “proud,” “enthusiastic,” “excited,” “calm,” “satisfied,” “peaceful,” “content,” and “relaxed” respondents felt during the day. Park (2015) translated this scale from English to Korean and used it to study the role of affect spin in the relationships between proactive personality and career decisions. In the present study, participants were instructed to “Rate each word in terms of how much you felt that way today.” These daily positive affect measures started with the phrase, “Today, I felt …” The response format was a 7‐point Likert‐type scale ranging from 1 ( not at all ) to 7 ( very much ).…”

“…Daily ratings began 1 week later after the introductory session, after the text message schedule was set up. Following Park's (2015) study, participants were sent the following text message in the morning on the first day: "Today is the first day of rating your affective experience and attitude toward career decisions; the rating will continue for the following 21 days. You will receive a text message at 9 p.m. each day."…”

“…Park (2015) finn ein positiv samvariasjon mellom alder og proaktiv personlegdom, men verken Li (2010) eller Seibert et al (1999) kan dokumentera ein signifikant korrelasjon mellom eldsjelfaktor og alder. Dette kan skuldast at utvala ofte har lita aldersspreiing.…”
