The Role of Acetic Acid in Magnesium Oxide Preparation via Chemical Precipitation

Abstract: The role of acetic acid in magnesium oxide (MgO) preparation through a chemical precipitation process was investigated in this work. The as‐synthesized precursors and MgO powders were characterized by X‐ray powder diffraction, Fourier‐transformed infrared spectroscopy, and differential thermal analysis. Compared with the samples without using acetic acid, the addition of acetic acid as a chemical modifier can enhance the crystal growth of the precursor Mg(OH)2 in (001) orientation, and significantly lower the … Show more

“…IR spectroscopy was employed to find the exact location of the Mg 2+ ions in the Mg/ZnO nanoparticles. If the Mg 2+ ions are outside the ZnO, the MgO hydrates should exhibit their characteristic Mg-OH IR vibrations [16] at about 3700 cm À1 ; both this band and the broad OH absorption at about 3400 cm À1 should increase with the B value. Otherwise, Mg-O-Zn bonds should appear, which will influence the original Zn-O vibration.…”

“…Exceptional proprieties of MgO as a catalytic material [15,16] or as an additive in building supplies (Sorel cement, lightweight building panels) and superconductor products have attracted both fundamental and application studies [17][18][19][20][21][22].…”

“…Approximately 20% of worldwide production came from seawater, brines and desalination reject brine [15]. Magnesium oxide is used as an exceptionally important material in catalysis [15,16], toxic waste remediation [18] or as additives in refractories, paints, in the manufacture of fertilizers, animal feedstuffs, building materials (Sorel cement, lightweight building panels) and superconductor products [19][20][21]. A panel of fundamental and applied studies is encountered in literature [21][22][23][24][25].…”

“…Besides the use in heterogeneous catalysis 2 , MgO is an interesting insulating and construction material or pharmaceutical compounds. Literature provides a number of methods developed for the synthesis of magnesium oxide, among them the sol-gel method 3 , methods based on chemical precipitation 4 , hydrothermal 5 , solvothermal 6 , electrochemical methods 7 and the method based on the use of microwaves 8,9 . The microwave method has been widely used in synthetic organic chemistry and in synthesis of other metal oxides by direct heating of hydrated precursors 10 .…”
