The Role of a Good Quality Autopsy in Pediatric Malpractice Claim: A Case Report of an Unexpected Death in an Undiagnosed Thymoma

Abstract: Thymomas are extremely rare in the first 20 years of life, with different clinical presentations: from asymptomatic mediastinal masses to compressive and paraneoplastic syndromes. In pediatric population, the respiratory disorders have a higher incidence. The overall thymoma mortality rate is described as 40% and metastasized tumors are more aggressive. This case report describes a compressive syndrome caused by a thymoma in which symptoms were exacerbated by a concurrent pulmonary infection, thus leading an a… Show more

“…Even if rare, endocrine diseases should be closely related to nc-SD. Notably, when other causes are excluded, this tragic event may be related to different pathological statuses such as adrenal insufficiency (although infrequent, it may occur in individuals treated for other critical conditions where impairment of corticoadrenal function often happen) [ 98 , 99 ], diabetic coma [ 100 ], severe hypothyroidism (myxedema) [ 101 ], parathyroid crisis [ 102 , 103 ], thymoma [ 104 ], etc.…”

“…Autopsy remains the gold standard method to establish the cause of death: knowledge of the cause of death may be critically important, both in health policies and in penal diatribes [ 31 , 32 ]. In the case of a post-mortem investigation, the histologic findings may be considered mandatory to define the exact cause of death, particularly in the case of sudden infant death [ 33 , 34 , 35 ].…”

“…It was a useful tool, which should be applied to the routine autopsy protocol [ 32 , 33 , 34 ]. Autopsy plays a crucial role in identifying the cause of death beyond any doubt [ 35 , 36 , 37 , 38 , 39 ]. Many unexpected deaths are currently associated with cardiovascular diseases and in many cases without any type of confirmation.…”
