The rocky reef fishes of Vermelha Beach, a marine estuarine transitional zone at Guanabara Bay, Brazil

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Rocky reefs are one of the most important biotopes in Guanabara Bay due to their broad distribution and high species diversity. This study aimed to describe the composition and structure of the fish assemblage associated with rocky reefs in Vermelha Beach (RJ/Brazil), an estuarine-marine transitional zone located at the entrance of Guanabara Bay. Fish were surveyed through underwater visual censuses, conducted by snorkeling divers along 10 m 2 -linear transects (n = 90). A total of 2.487 fishes were … Show more

“…Stephanolepis hispidus (Monacanthidae), and Abudefduf saxatilis (Pomacentridae) were the abundant species inhabiting an exposed estuarine beach located in a marine-estuarine transitional zone (Vermelha beach) (Rodrigues-Barreto et al, 2017). For a sheltered estuarine beach (Flamengo beach), richness and abundance were higher during spring (September to November) and lower during winter (June to August), while the relative abundance of fishes varied according to seasonal shifts in day length (Vasconcellos et al, 2010).…”

“…The spiny pufferfish (Chilomycterus spinosus spinosus), which was relatively more abundant in the Gamboa do Sucuriu, is also considered a species whose occurrence is associated with reefs (Rodrigues- Barreto et al 2017). Omnivores are best represented in places where there is a large variety of sessile invertebrates, and consequently offer a greater variety of food (Ferreira et al 2001).…”

“…Flamengo and Urca Beach are considered external seaport points since they are located near the oceanic zone, mainly Urca. Urca Beach is located very near the mouth of the bay, in the lower estuary region, suffering the influence of both oceanic marine waters and organic matter from inside the bay [13,27,28]. The Rio de Janeiro seaport is the major local domestic and international cargo tourist and people transportation route by the sea.…”
