The Road to NHDPlus — Advancements in Digital Stream Networks and Associated Catchments

Abstract: A progression of advancements in Geographic Information Systems techniques for hydrologic network and associated catchment delineation has led to the production of the National Hydrography Dataset Plus (NHDPlus). NHDPlus is a digital stream network for hydrologic modeling with catchments and a suite of related geospatial data. Digital stream networks with associated catchments provide a geospatial framework for linking and integrating water-related data. Advancements in the development of NHDPlus are expected … Show more

“…Water flow paths, incremental reaches, and catchments were defined by streams and water bodies in the 1:100,000‐scale National Hydrography Dataset Plus Version 2.0 (Moore and Dewald ) for the U.S. and a modified version of the Ontario Integrated Hydrology Data Enhanced Watercourse dataset developed by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry () for Canada (Vouk et al ). Additional reservoir information was included from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers National Inventory of Dams dataset for the U.S. (USACE ) and CanVec dataset (Centre for Topographic Information ) for Canada.…”

“…Each step of the construction process was written in a Jupyter notebook (Perez & Granger, ). The backbone of model construction is the NHDPlus (Moore & Dewald, ), which covers the conterminous U.S. and contains land‐surface attitude and the location and altitudes of stream reaches. Other digital data used include Fullerton and Richmond (1983–2007) (extent and type of glacial deposits); Soller and Garrity () (altitude of bedrock); and Trost () (recharge).…”

“…The National Hydrography Dataset Plus Version 2 (NHDPlusV2) integrates features from the Medium Resolution (1:100K) National Hydrography Dataset (NHD), National Elevation Dataset (NED), and Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD) to produce digital stream networks (flow lines) for the contiguous United States (http://www.hori zon-systems.com/nhdplus; McKay et al 2012, Moore andDewald 2016). In essence, this dataset creates a suitable spatial framework to assess macroscale processes in aquatic ecology.…”
