The Road Ahead: The Sustainability Transition and Coastal Research

Abstract: Although the organizing committee for the 2007 Coastal and Estuarine Research Federation (CERF) Biennial Conference and its international members supported the inclusion of sustainability science as a thematic element of the meeting, a preliminary review of program abstracts, conducted by entering various combinations of key words into the conference search engine, identified only 50 individual abstracts that incorporated one or more of the key words, or 3.8% of the 1,300 papers presented. Moreover, only 25 ab… Show more

“…The goal of MARES was to reach a science-based consensus about the defining characteristics and fundamental regulating processes of a south Florida coastal marine ecosystem that is both sustainable and capable of providing the diverse ecosystem services upon which our society depends. To achieve this goal, it was necessary to consider regional, social, political, cultural, economic, and public health factors, in both a research and management context, along with ecological variables [7], [42][45].…”

“…The ways in which these areas interact in time and space and across different city sizes and configurations could provide to be particularly novel research endeavors. Important issues such as the environmental footprint and social-ecological tradeoffs of coastal configurations of few large or a series of smaller cities settled along the coast are some key areas which need further development (Weinstein, 2009;Kaniewski et al, 2013;Barragán and de Andrés, 2015). Ultimately, coastal urban ecology still has important research opportunities in addressing the interactive effects of urban drivers, social-ecological responses and how planning processes accommodate these complex system dynamics.…”

“…Coastal settings and species have not received the attention they deserve, and only 5% of urban ecology research in Web of Science is focused in coastal or marine ecosystems. This is unfortunate because coastal cities present a variety of environments, including the land-marine ecotone interaction, and they are an important place for people to settle (Weinstein, 2009). According to the (United Nations, 2017), 40% of the world's population live <100 Km from the sea, and these cities have increased their population 6.6 times between 1945 and 2012 (Barragán and de Andrés, 2015).…”

“…The MMM series gives us a unique opportunity to analyse such trends over a period of almost 20 years. Conference theme and abstract analysis has been used as a window into broader research trends within related fields such as coastal sciences (Seaman, 2002;Weinstein, 2009), limnology (Lapierre et al, 2020) and conservation (Elliott et al, 2014), as well as other fields as diverse as media studies (Rice, 2005), medical studies (Lunny et al, 2011), library studies (Fourie, 2012), information systems and technology (Moro et al, 2017), pharmaceuticals (Korf et al, 2017) and medical informatics (Jia et al, 2018).…”
