The ritual of Tulak Bala (warding off calamities) has been carried out by Acehnese people from generation to generation to prevent bad lucks or disasters upon their life. The objective of this qualitative study is to discover the practice as the existence of COVID-19 considered one of the disasters. By combining library and field research, the data for this study were retrieved by applying in-depth interviews. The data analysis technique was accomplished by reducing, displaying and drawing conclusion of the data. Tulak Bala ritual is conducted in two ways. First, Acehnese people organize the ritual annually at the end of the second month in Islamic calendar, Safar, called as Rabu Habeh or Mano Safa (taking bath in a river of sea). Second, they apply the rituals when certain disasters occur, which in this case, COVID-19, having risk to their life. Its practical process is varied, namely having prayers and sending feast in mosques or houses, even having torch parade around the village. Besides, special amulets are sometimes hung on the back of house, on the roof and even in every corner of the house to avert the disease. The societal responses evidently agreed to apply the ritual, although many refused to believe Tulak Bala by reasoning that all the diseases are from Allah. They argued that focusing to increase faith in praying while keeping precautions is the only way to keep away the disease. This study focuses on ritual practice of dikee molod which is played by the Group of Dayah Tgk Chik Digla during the events surrounding the birthday of Prophet Muhammad PBUH in Aceh Besar. The study used qualitative methods with a public opinion survey approach. Data collection was done by comparing the data, categorisation, presenting data and making the inferences toward certain written information. The data validity is ensured by reading repeatedly (validity semantic), referring to the document sources and colleague discussion. By employing the approach of concept of ritual practice, this study emphasises that the verses (syair) of dikee molod will produce religious messages such as the utterance of the only god (monotheism), blessing (shalawat) upon the prophet, and the expression of joy and gladness of the birth of Prophet. In addition, religious messages have been influencing the life of Aceh people in terms of faith (iman) enhancement upon Allah and Rasulullah; influence toward the obedience upon the law (syariat) of Allah and sunnah of Rasulullah; and third the art of dikee molod ritual can be preserved not only by the networks of ritual meaning of dikee being recognised in the society that shows the function in a cultural event, but also caused by the reproduction of rituals carried out by interested parties and are rooted in a social system. This research critically studied the verbal and nonverbal symbols in the processions of the marriage tradition of the Gayo ethnic in Central Aceh by tracing back, exploring and examining all symbols and their symbolic meanings and philosophy as an effort of preserving one of the Gayo traditional heritages. Its main aim was to describe unique verbal and non-verbal symbolic features with semiotic meanings and philosophical messages based on the local values of the Gayo ethnic. The study employed a qualitative research design. The data were collected from observation, interviews and documentation. The data were analyzed with the Miles and Huberman interactive models consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/ verification. Meanwhile result analysis was based on the semiotic analysis of Roland Barthes. The result showed that most of the series of phases of Gayo ethnic marriage processions were filled with verbal and non-verbal symbols, which have semiotic meanings and philosophical messages which are still used until this day. However, many of those verbal and nonverbal symbols have no longer been understood well by Gayo young generation. Consequently, they only perform the series of processions as a formality without understanding the meaning of each symbol.
