The RITMARE Italian Fixed-Point Observatory Network (IFON) for marine environmental monitoring: a case study

Abstract: The Italian Fixed-Point Observatory Network (IFON) integrates well-established coastal and ocean infrastructures (buoys, platforms, moorings, mast platforms, etc.), most of them providing realtime multidisciplinary monitoring for a number of marine and atmospheric variables. Here, we describe the network characteristics and then discuss an example of its operation during the cold spell of winter 2012. One of the goals of the Italian Flagship Project Ricerca Italiana per il mare (RITMARE) is to create a common,… Show more

“…The W1M3A observatory continuously collects meteorological parameters 10 m above the sea surface, as well as oceanographic physical and bio-geo-chemical parameters in the upper 40 m of the water column, thus fulfilling the concept of Essential Ocean Climate Variable. The system is one of the open ocean fixed platform of OceanSITES and it is part of both the M3A [38] and IFON network [39]. Atmospheric pressure, wind speed and direction time series were analyzed.…”

“…Climate normal (CLINO 1961(CLINO -1990) data on the Liguria region are considered in order to analyze the variability of the precipitation on land. The W1M3A platform is part of the Italian [17] and European [18] networks of fixed open ocean observatories. It is also one of the three monitoring systems of the Mediterranean Sea forming the Mediterranean Moored Multi-sensor Array network [19] devoted to fulfill the requirements of operational oceanography in terms of acquisition and distribution of essential ocean climate variables [20] in near real-time.…”

“…We investigated the marine area around two fixed observatories (the E1 meteo-oceanographic buoy and the S1-GB dynamic pylon [32,33]), part of the Italian LTER network (long-term ecological research network, https://deims.org/6869436a-80f4-4c6d-954b-a730b348d7ce) deployed to study the ecosystems and the long-term response to environmental, societal and economic drivers [34]. Six sediment cores were collected with a box-corer in 2014, 2016 and 2017 during the oceanographic cruises EL-14, LTER-ANOC16 and INTERNOS17 onboard the R/V Dallaporta (Table 1).…”
