Abstract:Background: Methadone is associated with ventricular dysrhythmias and sudden death. Serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs) may increase the risk of these events either by inhibiting metabolism of methadone’s proarrhythmic (S)-enantiomer, additive QT interval prolongation, or both. We sought to determine whether certain SRIs were associated with a higher risk of methadone-related ventricular dysrhythmias or sudden death. Methods: We conducted a nested case-control study of Ontario residents receiving methadone bet… Show more
“…Investigators conducted a population‐based study to evaluate the clinical significance of this possible drug interaction by measuring the risk of methadone‐induced ventricular dysrhythmias or sudden death in patients treated concurrently with methadone and an SSRI 3 …”
Methadone maintenance therapy, commonly used in the treatment of opioid use disorder, has been associated with electrocardiographic QT interval prolongation.1 With comorbid mental illness often seen in methadone‐treated patients,2 concurrent antidepressant use is likely. This results in a high potential for drug interaction, especially with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
