“…A large proportion of the 211 individuals with corneal disease in our investigation had a pterygium lesion, which is more likely strongly related to spending longer periods of time working outdoors and ocular sun exposure [8,9] , but this condition is not the main cause of blindness in rural Hubei (Table 2). …”

“…2 However, many regard it to be a consequence of ultraviolet-induced damage with subsequent elastoid degeneration of the subepithelial connective tissue, [3][4][5] and it is strongly related to ocular sun exposure. [6][7][8][9] The prevalence rates of pterygium obtained from a number of populations range from 1.2% in urban Caucasians 9 to 31.01% in rural Chinese in southern China. 10 To the best of our knowledge, very few data are available on the prevalence of pterygium in Mongolian people at high altitude.…”

“…5 Some theories have also been proposed by few researchers that mutation of chromosome 17 on gene P53 can also be one of the predisposing factor. 6 Ultraviolet Rays (UVR) induced elastoid degeneration of subepithelial connective tissue, 7 genetic trauma and consequent altered cytokine expression 8 plays role in pathogenesis of pterygium. Mathur 8 and Ishioka 9 found an association between pterygium and a shortened tear breakup time and Schirmer's test in the case-control studies.…”
