“…The CREST study reported a 32,9% rate of ectopic pregnancy following tubal ligation [2]. The probability of ectopic pregnancy differs according to the sterilization method; bipolar coagulation is associated with the highest probability (17 ectopic pregnancies per 1,000 procedures), and postpartum salpingectomy, the lowest (1.5 per 1,000) [3]. Three mechanisms may be responsible from most tubal sterilization failures: luteal phase pregnancy, surgeon's error, and technical failure.…”

“…Using the CREST data, at 10 years after sterilization, the overall risk of ectopic pregnancy for all methods was 7.3 cases per 1000 procedures. 45 The highest risk for ectopic pregnancy was for bipolar coagulation, with 17.1 ectopic pregnancies identified per 1000 procedures at 10 years. Women younger than 30 years old who undergo bipolar coagulation sterilization were 27 times more likely to have an ectopic pregnancy than those who had a postpartum salpingectomy.…”
