The Rising of the Shield Hero. Development of the Post-Traumatic Symptom Questionnaire (PTSQ) and Assessment of the Protective Effect of Self-Esteem from Trauma-Related Anxiety and Depression

Abstract: Background Adverse life events such as life-threatening accidents, domestic and/or sexual violence, organic diseases (i.e., cancer), or COVID-19 can have a strong traumatic impact – generating reactions as intrusive thoughts, hyperarousal, and avoidance. Indeed, the traumatic impact of COVID-19 seems to lead individuals to experience anxiety and depression. However, the Anxiety-Buffer Hypothesis suggests that self-esteem could be considered a shield (buffer) against traumatic experiences and their… Show more

“…The measurement invariance analysis for the categorical data was run [ 87 ]. According to the guidelines [ 73 , 87 , 88 ], the following four (nested) models were set and their model parameters were consecutively forced to equality: configural invariance (Model 1: equal factorial structure); metric invariance (Model 2: equal factorial structure and item factor loadings); scalar invariance (Model 3: equal factorial structure, item factor loadings, and item thresholds); and means invariance (Model 4: equal factorial structure, item factor loadings, item thresholds, and latent means) [ 42 , 73 , 87 , 88 , 89 , 90 , 91 ]. These four models were sequentially compared.…”

“…Various approaches can be used to elaborate on and accept the threatening situation (Consoli et al, 2020 ; Sun et al, 2020 ). For example, according to the Terror Management Theory (Greenberg et al, 1992 ; Pyszczynski et al, 2004 ), the buffering effect of self-esteem may be used to hinder the adverse effects of symptoms (e.g., anxious, traumatic) triggered by the impersonal COVID-19 threat (Rossi et al, 2022a , b ). Since this kind of psychosocial phenomenon can have serious relapses for society and its components, interventions should be large-scaled to reach a large part of the population.…”

“…Following informed consent, participants were asked to complete a survey consisting of 10 sets of questions: demographic questions, the WSQ, the short form of the Post-Traumatic Symptom Questionnaire (PTSQ) [38][39][40], as well as selected dimensions of both the Patients Health Questionnaire (PHQ) and the 90-Revised Symptom Checklist (SCL-90-R).…”
